Team RAD Turns Newark Teal to Raise Ovarian Cancer Awareness
August 18, 2022 – Fertility News
Delaware towns are turning teal in September! The color teal has a dual meaning for women’s health in the month of September. In addition to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) Awareness Month, teal ribbons also represent Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Turn the Towns Teal is a national campaign to create awareness of ovarian cancer and its subtle symptoms.

Team RAD (pictured above are Patient Services Coordinators Jazmin Slemmer & Lindsay Millis alongside Medical Assistant Sharonda Gamble) helps prepare ribbons for turning Newark teal to raise awareness for Ovarian Cancer.
RADfertility is proud to lead the effort to teal Newark and join other communities across Delaware. After a brief pause the past two years due to the pandemic, this year marks the 6th year the City of Newark and new Mayor Stu Markham are supporting this initiative. Teal ribbons will line sign and light posts up and down Main Street in Newark throughout the month of September. Newark joins other Delaware towns including Delaware City, Dover, Lewes, Middletown, Milton, New Castle and Rehoboth Beach in the awareness campaign.
Volunteers from Lori’s Hands and the University of Delaware’s Medical Laboratory Science Program join RADfertility staff members to assist with the teal bow display and education efforts.
The Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, is a local resource whose mission is to help save more women’s lives through increasing awareness and education, raising funds for research, and helping women diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Hello Grotto Pizza! Main Street in Newark is once again turning teal in the month of September to raise awareness for ovarian cancer.

Patient Services Coordinator, Clarise Grey, created her own teal ribbon assembly line!
About Ovarian Cancer
Every woman is at risk of developing ovarian cancer. Knowing the subtle symptoms and risk factors can literally save a woman’s life. If detected in its early stages, the success rate is 90-95%. A pap test does not detect ovarian cancer. As of today, there is no conclusive early detection test.
Even in its early stages, ovarian cancer has symptoms. Once thought to be a ‘silent disease,’ research indicates that 95% of women with ovarian cancer have vague but persistent symptoms. Several health organizations have endorsed a consensus statement concluding that the following symptoms are likely to occur in women with ovarian cancer:
- Bloating
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly
- Urinary symptoms (urgency or frequency)
Other symptoms of ovarian cancer may include:
- Extreme fatigue
- Indigestion, heartburn or upset stomach
- Lower back and/or leg pain
- Change in bowel habits (constipation or diarrhea)
- Weight gain or weight loss
- Menstrual irregularities
- Shortness of breath
- Pain during intercourse
These symptoms are not always useful for diagnosis since they may be indicative of other conditions. The key is to recognize the symptoms and see your doctor if any combination of these symptoms persists for more than 2 weeks.
