Carey Gerres was at her emotional limit. She and her husband Nate received encouragement from friends and family to continue their journey to build a family, but Carey wasn’t sure she could.
For Carey, getting pregnant wasn’t the problem. She had experienced five losses in a row, and none of the specialists the couple had seen could explain her fertility challenges.
The specialists had narrowed down the problem to Carey’s ovulation cycle: if she could ovulate one good egg, she would overcome her fertility challenges. But even after extensive testing, no specialist could pinpoint exactly why Carey’s eggs weren’t leading to a typical pregnancy.
It seemed as if Carey and Nate’s dreams of building a family had hit an insurmountable wall—that is, until a friend recommended Reproductive Associates of Delaware (RAD). Carey found the RAD Fertility Assessment, and scheduled an appointment for an initial consultation.
The couple met with Dr. Adrienne Neithardt, who realized immediately after listening to Carey’s story that she was a perfect candidate for pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS).
PGS significantly increases the likelihood of a successful pregnancy by identifying a euploid embryo—an embryo with all 46 chromosomes. The screening involves biopsying a few cells from an embryo with a tiny glass tube called a pipette, and sending it off to a lab for testing. The embryos are then frozen until the results come back. PGS tests for a number of different chromosomal abnormalities, such as Down Syndrome, Kleinfelter Syndrome, Triple X Syndrome, and Turner Syndrome. For Carey, PGS meant an opportunity to finally get the answers she was seeking, and a chance at having a successful pregnancy.
After some initial testing, Dr. Neithardt also found another issue when meeting with Carey: she had a small uterine septum that separated her vaginal wall in addition to endometrial polyps and stage 2 endometriosis. Dr. Neithardt recommended laparoscopic surgery to correct these issues, and then suggested moving forward with IVF and PGS through RAD’s IVF For ME™ program.
After Carey recovered from surgery, she began IVF, which started with the stimulation process, followed by egg retrieval. Carey and Nate wanted to make sure they maximized the number of embryos they could test with PGS, so the couple decided to bank their embryos until she had eight day-5 embryos to test.
Two egg retrievals gave Carey the embryos she needed to begin PGS. Of the eight embryos sent for testing, three of her embryos were euploid. Armed with the knowledge that these embryos were her best chance for a successful pregnancy, Carey was ready for her frozen embryo transfer.
Carey had one of her embryos thawed and transferred, and became pregnant on the first attempt. The couple was cautiously optimistic that this time, Carey would have a typical pregnancy.
Sure enough, Carey delivered her son, Parker Gerres, in December 2011. She credits PGS for helping her have her son, and RAD for helping her to achieve what she once thought was unattainable.
Update: After giving birth to Parker, Carey and Nate adopted a girl, Anna, in August 2013. She and Parker are 11 months apart.
“I truly believe that, without the PGS chromosome testing, I would have continued to experience the devastation of pregnancy loss. I could never say thank you enough.”
