Endometriosis
Many people may be surprised to hear just how common endometriosis is. It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 10 women worldwide may be affected by the condition. Endometriosis is a serious women’s health issue that often goes unrecognized.
What Is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when the lining of the uterus (endometrial tissue) grows outside the uterine cavity in areas such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and abdominal cavity. The excess tissue can cause irritation and pain in the organs where the endometrial tissue is growing and this irritation can develop into bands of scar-like tissue (adhesions) that can make it difficult for women to become pregnant.
What Signs or Symptoms Are Associated With Endometriosis?
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Painful periods or an abnormal menstrual cycle
- Pain during intercourse
- Infertility
- Feeling bloated or suffering from diarrhea or constipation
- Frequent urination
