Egg Freezing
Egg freezing technology allows you to take steps to preserve your fertility. RADfertility’s physicians create an individualized treatment plan to address your specific needs.
How Egg Freezing Works
The egg freezing process at RADfertility is identical to what women undergo for IVF at our centers. Initially, the ovaries are stimulated with medications to allow multiple eggs to develop within the same treatment cycle. Then, the eggs are retrieved in a 10-minute to 15-minute office procedure performed under anesthesia. Once the eggs are retrieved, our laboratory embryologists identify the fully developed eggs, and those eggs are vitrified.
Egg freezing has been around for three decades, but was considered experimental by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) until 2012. Many IVF clinics have little experience thawing eggs or showing a consistent track record of generating pregnancies from eggs they’ve both frozen and thawed. However, our lab technicians at RAD have successfully thawed 156 donor and non-donor cycles at our centers.
Why Egg Freezing Might Be Right for You
- If you are a woman undergoing a medical treatment such as chemotherapy that might compromise your fertility (Oncofertility)
- If you are a woman who wants to delay having a child for personal or professional reasons
- If you have a family history of early menopause
Understanding Fertility Rates and Age
Fertility and egg freezing conversations are usually centered on round numbers like 30 years, 35 years or 40 years, but the optimal age to freeze eggs is really not known. Women who know they are going to delay having children for one reason or another should have discussions about egg freezing sooner rather than later.
Numerous factors or diseases can impact male and female fertility, but predicting any particular woman’s current or future fertility is a challenge. Many fertility problems for women are hidden in common issues like tubal disease or endometriosis.
